Teaching All Students to Read: Is It Really Possible?
Guest Speaker - Joseph Torgesen, Ph.D.

Dr. Torgesen is a reading scientist who has spent the last seven years working actively with schools throughout the nation to improve teaching and learning in literacy.  In this presentation, he will provide examples from successful schools that illustrate the innovations necessary to prevent reading difficulties for most children.  He will focus on the instruction and organization required at both the classroom and school level to meet the needs of all children in schools that serve diverse populations of students.

Dr. Torgesen is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Education at Florida State University. He is also the founding director of the Florida Center for Reading Research, and has been studying children with learning difficulties in reading for over thirty years. He is the author of over 190 published articles, chapters, books, and tests related to understanding and improving instruction for students who experience difficulties learning to read. He was on the first board of directors for the Institute for Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education, and is a recent recipient of the Samuel T. Orton award for excellence in research from the International Dyslexia Association.
